Three Years On: A Journey of Growth, Courage, and Unseen Strength

Image
Today marks three years since I made the call that changed everything. On the 19th of November 2022, I phoned Jenson’s school and said the words I never imagined I’d have to say: “I won’t be bringing him back until there is a plan in place to support him.” That plan never came. What followed were the hardest, most defining years of our lives. Three Years of Fighting for Support In these three years, Jenson was diagnosed autistic. He entered a deep burnout that took months - realistically, years - to slowly come out of. We applied for an EHC needs assessment, only to be refused, despite him clearly meeting every criteria. I changed jobs because my line manager didn’t understand the reality of parenting a child in trauma… … and eventually I had to take a career break altogether, because Jenson needed 24/7 support, and nothing was moving quickly enough for him to get the help he required. We appealed the EHCNA refusal - and we won. The LA agreed to assess and accepted h...

Why We Chose Home Education

Image
Deciding to home educate was not a decision we took lightly, but it has been one of the most rewarding choices we’ve made for our family. Our 15-year-old daughter, Atlanta, has been home educated for nearly a year, and while it was ultimately her decision, it was inspired in part by her observations of how her younger brother, Jenson, aged 8, has been learning outside the school system. Jenson has complex special educational needs (SEND) and is currently on an Education Other Than At School (EOTAS) package, which provides a tailored and flexible approach to his education. This experience highlighted the potential of learning beyond traditional classrooms. Witnessing Jenson’s progress and the difference that a personalised education has made to his confidence and wellbeing, Atlanta began to consider whether a similar approach could work for her. Day One of the Journey It all began on the first day of my career break when, just before leaving for school, Atlanta asked, “Can I home educat...

Navigating the EHCP Process: A Parent's Guide

Image
Battling the EHCP process has been one of the hardest and longest battles of my life. The journey has been marked by challenges, small victories, and immense learning. In this blog, I aim to share my experience, insights, and practical advice for other parents navigating this difficult path. If you need help, I am happy to support where I can. Understanding the EHCP Process An Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) is a legally binding document that outlines the support a child or young person with Special Educational Needs (SEN) requires to meet their educational goals. Contrary to common belief, you do not need a diagnosis to apply for an EHCP. As a parent, you can apply independently - it does not have to come from a teacher or professional. The legal threshold for an Education, Health, and Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA) is straightforward: "The local authority must conduct an EHCNA if the child or young person has or may have special educational needs and it may be necessary ...

A Neurodivergent Christmas: Embracing Our Own Perfect

Image
When you think of Christmas, what comes to mind? For many, it’s the picture-perfect images plastered across social media or the polished commercials with matching pyjamas, a bustling house full of family, and a table overflowing with food. But the reality is, everyone’s version of a perfect Christmas looks different - and that’s okay. For us, Christmas has been a journey of trial, adjustment, and embracing what works best for our family. Finding Our Own Traditions Years ago, before we had children, Martyn and I spent Christmas in America. We were living there with our jobs, and I was in awe of the way they celebrated - big, bold, and bustling with energy. I dreamed of recreating that level of excitement and hustle with my own family someday. However, life doesn’t always follow the script we imagine. Over time, family dynamics, and more recently, Jenson’s neurodivergent needs, led us to adapt our Christmas celebrations. What we’ve learned is that a smaller, more intimate day suits our f...

Welcome to Empowered by Difference!

Hi there! I’m so glad you’ve stumbled across this little corner of the internet where I plan to pour out my heart and my experiences— all while juggling life as a parent, advocate, and home educator. Consider this blog your cozy seat at my kitchen table (just ignore the mess; it’s part of the aesthetic). Let me introduce myself and what this space is all about. Who Am I? I’m Laney, a parent who has somehow found themselves deep in the whirlwind of neurodivergence, home education, and the labyrinth that is the EHCP process. My family is a wonderful mix of chaos and connection, driven by love, adaptability, and a good dose of caffeine. If you’re imagining a picture-perfect scene, let me stop you right there — think more along the lines of unbrushed hair, mismatched socks, and a sense of humor that’s kept me sane through it all. Why This Blog? Honestly? It’s partly for me. Life has been about advocating for others for so long that I’ve decided to carve out a space where I can reflect, wri...
