Welcome to Empowered by Difference!

Hi there! I’m so glad you’ve stumbled across this little corner of the internet where I plan to pour out my heart and my experiences— all while juggling life as a parent, advocate, and home educator. Consider this blog your cozy seat at my kitchen table (just ignore the mess; it’s part of the aesthetic). Let me introduce myself and what this space is all about.

Who Am I?

I’m Laney, a parent who has somehow found themselves deep in the whirlwind of neurodivergence, home education, and the labyrinth that is the EHCP process. My family is a wonderful mix of chaos and connection, driven by love, adaptability, and a good dose of caffeine. If you’re imagining a picture-perfect scene, let me stop you right there — think more along the lines of unbrushed hair, mismatched socks, and a sense of humor that’s kept me sane through it all.

Why This Blog?

Honestly? It’s partly for me. Life has been about advocating for others for so long that I’ve decided to carve out a space where I can reflect, write, and occasionally rant. But it’s also for you. If you’re here, chances are you’ve got your own story that’s brought you into the world of neurodivergence, education outside the norm, or fighting for the support your child deserves. Maybe you’re a fellow parent, an educator, or just someone curious about what this all entails. Whatever your reason, welcome.

What Can You Expect?

This blog will be a blend of real-life experiences, practical advice, and candid reflections. I’ll write about:

  • Our Journey to Diagnosis: The twists, turns, and tears that led to understanding neurodivergence in our family.

  • The EHCP Process: A crash course in patience and persistence, sprinkled with tales of bureaucracy.

  • Being Awarded EOTAS: What it’s like to secure bespoke education when the traditional system doesn’t work.

  • Home Education: The highs, the lows, and the surprising moments of joy (and frustration) along the way.

  • Complaints: Let’s just say I’ve got a PhD in polite but firm letter writing.

  • Flexible Working: How I balance advocating for my kids while trying to make time for myself.

  • Our Family Setup: A peek into how we make it work as a team.

My Promise to You

I’m not here to pretend I’ve got it all figured out (spoiler: I don’t). But I’ll share what I’ve learned, what’s worked, what hasn’t, and maybe even some moments that will make you laugh. Think of this blog as a mix of a how-to guide, a diary, and a much-needed hug for anyone feeling overwhelmed by the journey.

Let’s Connect

Whether you’re here for tips, solidarity, or just a bit of light reading, I’m thrilled to have you along for the ride. Drop a comment, share your own story, or just say hi. Together, we’ll navigate the beautiful, messy, and empowering world of difference.

Thanks for being here, and let’s get started!

Stay empowered,

Laney

  1. This is fantastic. I can't wait to read your blogs. My life is complete and utter chaos but I wouldn't have it any other way. Juggling 2 jobs. Parenting 2 kids 1 whom was recently diagnosed combined ADHD and the other who leaves me exhausted with her unique ways! She is definitely not for the faint hearted. I'm hoping to learn from you and navigate my own family through difficult times xx
